..aur Irani Chai…

Between the 9:10 local and the 9:30 office opening time, I sometimes manage to squeeze in a few minutes for breakfast at an Irani Cafe bang opposite Grant Road station (E).

B. Merwan and Co. has been around for over a 100 years now and seems cocooned in a time warp. It has an old world charm to it that allows you to sit back, and savor the most neglected meal of your day. There are round tables with 4 chairs on each table on which myriad people keep playing musical chair on. The cafe plays host to an eclectic mix of people: the old bearded guy sipping his tea slowly from his cup, the everyday labourer dunking his ‘khari biscuit’ in tea and rushing off, the portly havaldar having Bun Maska before he sets off on his beat, the smart office executive eating his omlette with buttered bread….all at the same table, sometimes engaging in small chit chat.

The prices are extremely low and this has kept this Cafe happily ‘inclusive’. The favorite items are Bun Maska, Omelette’s, Pudding, Mawa Cakes, Khari biscuit  during breakfast time.  A breakfast consisting of a double omelette, bun maska and chai will cost you about Rs. 25.

Having breakfast here is fulfilling for the stomach and for the heart.
